Questions people ask ·

What is the 50/30/20 rule?50/30/20

A simple starting split for take-home income: about 50% on needs, 30% on wants and 20% on saving. It is a rule of thumb, not a law. Its value is that it makes you decide on purpose where each rupee goes.

Does it work for Indian households?

Often not as-is. City rent or a home-loan EMI, school fees and support for parents can push needs well past 50%. That is why there are other starting points here, like 60/20/20 and 70/20/10. Festivals, weddings and family functions are real costs too: plan them as saving goals through the year instead of letting them land as wants.

What counts as a need and what is a want?

Needs are what you must pay to live and work: rent or EMI, groceries, electricity and gas, school fees, transport, medicines, insurance premiums and minimum loan payments. Wants are the rest: eating out, streaming, shopping beyond the basics, upgrades. The same item can be either: a phone that works is a need, the newest model is a want.

Where does the saving part go first?

Many people start with an emergency cushion, often a few months of needs kept somewhere safe and easy to reach, then save towards goals. Pay off expensive debt such as unpaid credit-card balances early, because its interest usually outruns anything savings earn. What fits you depends on your situation.

My income changes every month. Can I still budget?

Yes. Budget on your lowest usual month, not your best one. In a good month, move the extra to saving first, so the lean months are covered.
