Questions people ask ·
What is an EMI?EMI
An Equated Monthly Instalment is the fixed amount you pay every month to repay a loan. Each EMI has two parts: interest on what you still owe, and a slice of the loan itself. Early on, most of the EMI is interest; towards the end, most of it repays the loan.
How is EMI calculated?EMI
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the yearly interest rate divided by 12 (as a decimal), and n is the number of months. This is the reducing-balance method most bank loans use: interest is charged only on what you still owe.
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1)। यहाँ P लोन की रकम है, r सालाना ब्याज दर को 12 से भाग देकर (दशमलव में), और n महीनों की संख्या। ज़्यादातर बैंक लोन इसी "रिड्यूसिंग बैलेंस" तरीक़े से चलते हैं: ब्याज सिर्फ़ उस रकम पर लगता है जो अभी बाकी है।
Why does a longer loan cost more if the EMI is smaller?
Stretching the loan lowers each instalment, but you owe money for longer, so interest is charged for more months. Try the same loan over 12 and then 36 months above: the EMI drops, and the total interest climbs.
What about "flat rate" and "no-cost EMI" offers?"
A flat rate charges interest on the full loan for the whole term, even after you have repaid part of it, so a "12% flat" loan costs far more than 12% on a reducing balance. A "no-cost EMI" usually means the interest is covered by a discount or built into the price; look for processing fees and whether you lose a cash discount. Ask for the total amount you will pay, and compare that.
What else adds to the cost of a loan?
Processing fees, GST on fees and on card interest, insurance bundled with the loan, late-payment charges and prepayment penalties. A missed EMI can also hurt your credit score, which makes the next loan dearer. This calculator shows the interest only.
